ST. LOUIS, June 5, 2014 /3BL Media/ – Sigma-Aldrich Corporation (Nasdaq: SIAL) was named in the top five today on Newsweek’s 2014 Green Rankings, one of the world’s foremost corporate environmental rankings. In its third appearance on the list, Sigma-Aldrich ranked number five out of 500 U.S. corporations, putting the St. Louis-based life science company in the top 1 percent for environmental performance.

“We are once again honored to be recognized by Newsweek,” said Rakesh Sachdev, President and CEO. “Sustainable business practices have become an integral part of our corporate culture. We are dedicated to finding ways to lessen our environmental impact and that of our customers, from growing our line of greener alternative products to reducing our water usage by 31 percent since 2010, saving roughly 1.5 million cubic meters of water.”

The 2014 Green Rankings assess the environmental performance of the 500 largest, publicly traded U.S. companies according to market capitalization. Companies are measured against their industry peers using eight clearly defined metrics including energy, water and waste usage and corporate reputation. At number five on the nationwide list, Sigma-Aldrich was one of the highest-ranking companies among its peer group.

“As a Company we have worked over the past five years to integrate sustainability into our business and to partner with our customers in their own efforts to improve sustainability,” said Jeffrey Whitford, Global Citizenship Manager. “We are uniquely positioned to help customers reduce their environmental impacts at the earliest stages of R&D. The ripple effect of these greener alternatives is substantial, and it’s exciting to be a part of such an important, long-term change.”
