The local farmer's markets are one of my favorite ways to shop local. Supporting local farms is not only good for the farmers but for consumers as well. The products (in my opinion) are of a higher quality, they're fresher, which naturally makes them more delicious, and  you can't beat the prices. You won't find deals at your local supermarket like those at the farmer's market.

Shipping food from countries around the world obviously takes an enormous toll on the environment. Buying locally not only gets you the freshest products that are in season, it also supports sustainable local business. Also, keep in mind the theory that fruits and vegetables start losing their nutrients the moment they are picked, so the longer it takes to get from farm to kitchen the more nutrients are lost from our food. So if you have the choice, an apple from Chile or an apple from your home state, I suggest choosing the latter.

We have several local markets in our area, Ridgewood, Ramsey, Teaneck, Hasbrouck Heights, to name a few. Last weekend Matt and I headed to the one in Ridgewood. We saw yummy carrots and eggplant, melons, jersey tomatoes, AND my new favorite veggie BEETS! (see photos)

I think beets taste best roasted, no need for salt or butter. Just wash them well wrap in tinfoil and heat in the oven at 450 for about 30-40 minutes depending on the size of the beet. When they are easily pierced with a knife take them out of the oven and let them cool. The skin should easily peel off, I usually just scrape them with a spoon. Voila instant delicious side dish!

If the colors are amazing, that's a pretty good sign that the flavor will be amazing too. My only issue is I tend to get excited and over buy. On Sunday when I'm relatively rested, I always have grand plans for what I'm cooking for the week. So lesson learned, even if the sign says 4 for a dollar...pick one and walk away. Or if you find yourself unable to resist such a great deal, invite some friends and family over for an awesome meal made from the freshest local ingredients.  : )
