CHERRY HILL, N.J., October 3, 2013 /3BL Media/ – Subaru of America, a longtime supporter of animals and animal assistance organizations, is supporting the “Operation Special Delivery” Caravan and Flyway, October 4-5, 2013. The flyway provides transportation, via private planes and a caravan of vehicles, from a high-kill shelter near Ft. Stewart, GA, and other surrounding shelters to receiving rescue groups in Florida and the northeast United States. To help get animals to their “forever homes,” Subaru is providing vehicles for animal transport, meals and overnight accommodations for volunteer pilots, and animal travel items.

Subaru has been an active partner of Pilots N Paws since 2009, and will be joined this year by actress, New York Times bestselling author, and animal welfare enthusiast Pam Grier, who will join other volunteers to assemble pet crates, place collars and tags on animals, and prepare animals for flight.

Preparations begin Friday, October 4, at Mid-Coast Regional Airport in Hinesville, GA, with Subaru hosting a catered dinner for the pilots, while volunteers prepare for the airlift. At dawn on Saturday, October 5, animal rescue groups will deliver the animals, and volunteers will help prepare them for flight and caravan transport. More than 50 private pilots – who pay for their own fuel to make the journey – will then fly the animals to the next leg of their journey to adoption.

In addition to working with local county shelters to save those animals, the rescue partners will also be rescuing all animals housed at the Ft. Stewart shelter at the time of the event. Many of these dogs will go on to be trained as service and comfort dogs for veterans with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and other special needs through Guardians of Rescue’s Paws of War program.
