The BRP-Cascades Golf Tournament: an Eco-Responsible Event
KINGSEY FALLS, QC, July 2, 2013 /3BL Media/ - The second edition of the BRP-Cascades golf tournament benefitting the Fondation du CHUS took place on Wednesday, June 19. Besides helping to raise a record $1,696,125, both partners, in collaboration with the eco-consulting firm Takt-etik, stepped up their efforts by adding new green measures to the event, that helped to obtain a level 2 sustainable event management standard from the Bureau de normalisation du Québec (BNQ).
The amount raised, thanks to the generosity of participants and companies attending the tournament, will be used to purchase medical equipment to combat cancer. These donations will finance, among other things, the purchase of a surgical robot, equipment for medical care, education and research, besides helping research workers financially.
"From year to year, this tournament enables us to raise even more money for the Fondation du CHUS, an organization that BRP and its Eastern Townships employees wholeheartedly support, stated José Boisjoli, President and Chief Executive Officer and Co-President of the tournament. Since the 2011 BRP Club in Montreal, the largest gathering in our history which was also certified by the BNQ, we have strived to organize eco-responsible events. Our collaboration with Cascades, now in its second year, gives us wings in that regard".
The Cascades Green Squad Enabled a Diversion Rate of 98%
Management of residual materials is an important component of the responsible event management standard. A tournament of this stature, as well as its preparation, generates a lot of materials. This year, Cascades, in charge of coordinating the members of the Green Squad, decided to triple its onsite workforce in addition to ensuring that many three-way bins were brought to the site in order to sort all materials generated during the event. Everyone's efforts enabled the recovery of 94.32 kg of compostable materials, 2,322.65 kg of recyclable materials, mainly cardboard, and 48.45 kg of garbage, which is 104 g of final waste per participant, the equivalent in weight of two golf balls. "Obtaining a recovery rate of 98% is remarkable and exceeds the objectives we set for ourselves", declared Alain Lemaire, Executive Chairman of the Board of Cascades and Co-President of the tournament. "We wish to thank the Environment Department of the City of Magog, which supported our efforts and simplified the work of the Cascades Green Squad" he went on to say.
Water Savings of 30 %
In addition to all the measures thought of specifically for the event, water-saving measures were added. Faucet aerators in the main chalet were changed for low-flow faucet aerators. Moreover, at the time of the tournament, hourglass timers and posters explaining this initiative were installed in bathrooms, requesting everyone's cooperation to limit their water use. Finally, water bottles were given to participants at the beginning of the day and a water distribution system was thought of in order to eliminate single-use water bottles on the site.
56 Trees Will Be Planted To Offset Greenhouse Gas Emissions
Like last year, all travel for the 180 participants and 85 volunteers will be offset by the planting of trees in Magog, the host region of the tournament. The organization Compensation CO 2 Québec located in Ham-Nord was chosen to carry out this work and will be in charge of planting the 56 trees required to offset 10 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions within the framework of the event.
98% Local Suppliers
The responsible event management standard awards more points if suppliers involved in the event are located close to the host venue. This was the case again this year since 98% of suppliers had a subsidiary within a 100-kilometre radius of the golf club.

Our health is also dependent on the environment", said the Chairman of the Board of the Fondation du CHUS, Mr. Dany Lachance.
Proud of all these positive results, the organizing committee now has one year ahead of it to consider new initiatives to put in place within the framework of the next edition.
