AEG Facilities’ PPG Paints Arena and the Los Angeles Convention Center Recognized for LEED Green Building Certifications
U.S. Green Building Council issues LEED in Motion: Venues report – Features impact LEED and green practices have on venues’ triple bottom line
LOS ANGELES, Feb. 16, 2017 /3BL Media/ – The Los Angeles Convention Center (LACC) and PPG Paints Arena were recognized today for their sustainability efforts in embracing Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) green building certifications in the U.S. Green Building Council’s LEED in Motion: Venues report. Both venues are managed by AEG Facilities, a stand-alone division of AEG.
The report highlights the efforts of convention centers, sports venues, performing arts centers, community centers and public assembly spaces to transform their environmental, social and economic footprint through the LEED certification program. Both the LACC and PPG Paints Arena were included as being among the most impressive green venues around the world, in their respective categories.
In 2015 the LACC was named the largest convention center in the U.S. to achieve LEED Gold recertification under LEED O+M: Existing Buildings. The venue first achieved Gold certification in 2010. LACC saves approximately 470,000 gallons of water each year due to water efficiency projects; such as replacing 30,000 square feet of lawn with drought-tolerant vegetation.
PPG Paints Arena, home to the 2016 Stanley Cup Champions, the Pittsburgh Penguins, was the first NHL arena to achieve LEED Gold under LEED BD+C: New Construction. Since assuming management of the arena in 2012, AEG Facilities instituted its energy and sustainability programs under its AEG 1EARTH program to spur further operational efficiencies; such as, variable frequency drives to the cooling tower fan motors, saving an additional 216,000 kilowatt hours of electricity per year.
“We are proud of both PPG Paints Arena and the LACC’s ongoing sustainable operations and recognition of their LEED certifications. The continued adoption of sustainable practices in our facilities demonstrate our dedication to reaching AEG’s new 2020 Environmental Goals,” said Bob Newman, president of AEG Facilities.
LEED in Motion: Venues is the latest in a series of reports from USGBC designed to provide a holistic snapshot of the green building movement. The report equips green building advocates with the insight and perspective to understand the use of the globally recognized LEED rating system and to make a strong case for sustainable building activity.
