AECOM Blog: Reconciliation in Australia

Aug 13, 2014 10:00 AM ET
AECOM's first Reconciliation Action Plan in Australia commits the company to helping the nation take clear, authentic and measurable first steps to improve relationships with as well as build respect and provide greater opportunities for Australia’s indigenous people.

"To people around the world, Australia is known as a land of plenty, of golden beaches, bronzed surfers and an enviable lifestyle," begins AECOM's Nicola Young, corporate social responsibility manager in Australia New Zealand.   Diving into the historical treatment of Australia's indigenous peoples, she continues, "The history of the Stolen Generation makes for heart-breaking reading.  No official figures were kept, but estimates state between 20,000 and 100,000 children were taken from their families by government agencies from the late 1800s through to the 1970s under assimilation policies.  Raised in orphanages and foster homes, many children were abused and became disconnected from their identities as indigenous people.   "More recently, Australia has turned a corner."

To help expand on topics important to AECOM and our stakeholders, we have created a corporate blog to reflect our voice and start some conversations with employees, clients, and other stakeholders. With more than 45,000 employees, this blog is an opportunity for us to share the many stories — about employee excellence, industry insights, innovative project solutions, corporate social responsibility experiences, safety for life, or sustainable perspectives. The blog will offer a perspective on current topics, voice stories from our employees around the world, feature programs we are proud of, and give information about some of the challenges in the industry. We hope you’ll join the conversation.
