Waverly Day Bed (w/Trundle) from Shaka Studios is Greenspiration Home American Made “Pick-of-the-Week!”

Dual Purpose Bedding Uses Wood with a Chain of Custody!

(3BL Media / theCSRfeed) - November 30, 2011 - It’s pronounced “Shey-kuh” not “Shock-kuh.”  That is, as in the “Shaker” furniture that Shaka Studios takes its inspiration from, and the combination of the owners’ names, Shane and Kandas Rodarte.  They thought the name was clever until people started pronouncing it “Shock-kuh.”  Nevertheless, the name stuck, as did this Texas couple’s dream to begin crafting furniture that replicates the traditional craftsmanship of Colonial and Early American furniture.

It’s a cute story, but that’s not what made us choose this daybed and trundle as the Greenspiration Home American Made Pick-of-the-Week.  We love it because it serves dual purposes (i.e. it’s space efficient!) and is made of American grown wood by American hands.  Imagine an office that is suddenly a guestroom for two.  Or a child’s room where twin beds suddenly accommodate a sleepover for four.  Like all Shaka Studios beds it has an easy 8-bolt assembly.  (Don’t worry – there’s even a video to show you how.)

Environmentally and Economically Responsible
Shaka Studios builds and finishes all of its furnishings in its “Rustic Wood Shop” in New Waverly, Texas. Tate Taylor, creator of The Help, among other famed persons, is among the proud owners of Shaka Studios creations.  However, celebrity status doesn’t impress us nearly as much as the care this company takes to run an environmentally responsible shop.  For starters, Shaka Studios demands a Chain of Custody certificate for each load of American grown lumber they purchase. They repurpose cardboard from appliance boxes to build containers to ship their products.  And the sawdust and shavings from their finishing processes go to a nearby farm where it serves as bedding for free-range chickens.

It is clear that the Rodartes take sustainability personally.

“I’ve read too many articles about lumber pirates wiping out protected forests to harvest lumber for pennies on the dollar of what it costs legitimate suppliers.  It breaks my heart to hear these stories because it’s not good for the environment or the economy,” says Kandas Rodarte.

We couldn’t agree more.
