VolunteerMatch Announces February's Match Studio Collaborative Artist: Try Cheatham

OAKLAND, Calif., February 18, 2021 /3BL Media/ – VolunteerMatch, the largest nonprofit network on the web connecting volunteers with opportunities to give back, announces the Match Studio Collaborative February artist, Try Cheatham.

Designed to highlight the role of art as advocacy, and advocacy and activism as two key expressions of modern volunteerism, the Collaborative provides a forum for BIPOC artists to produce work that is then reproduced in highly accessible formats to fundraise towards a meaningful cause of each featured artist’s choice.

Try's work comfortably confronts fundamentally opposing ideas of her experiences with aesthetic metaphor. In her professional, volunteer, and artistic work, she seeks to normalize marginalized groups and champion proper representation of all people at seemingly invisible intersections.

"My contribution’s focus for February Black History Month is on merging two heavyweight ideas Race-integration busing (U.S. Supreme Court landmark decision Brown v. Board of Education) and DC Statehood — a political movement that advocates making the District of Columbia a U.S. state granting the District voting representation in the Congress and full control over local affairs," said Cheatham.

She has chosen Street Sense Media as the recipient of funds for her original Match Studio Collaborative work. The organization strives to end homelessness in the Washington, D.C. area by empowering people in need with the skills, tools, and confidence to succeed. They use a range of media platforms to raise awareness and spotlight solutions to homelessness in D.C communities.

The Collaborative does still have openings for independent artists passionate about social justice causes and wishing to apply. Featured artists will be announced each month in 2021.

Thanks to private philanthropic support, each featured artist is eligible to receive a stipend of between $500 and $1000 to help with the development of their original work produced through the Collaborative in 2021. Projects typically include a combination of original visual art, video, live spoken word, music and performance events and are reproduced and made available as fundraisers through VolunteerMatch’s online channels.
