RALEIGH, N.C., June 8, 2020 /3BL Media/ - In partnership with international hunger relief non-profit Rise Against Hunger, United employees across the country are volunteering to package over 300,000 meals for vulnerable communities around the world.

From June 8-19, employees at three major U.S. airports, Dulles International Airport (IAD), Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) and San Francisco International Airport (SFO), will work in shifts to safely package the nutritious meals that will then be distributed to people in critical need in Nicaragua and Vietnam. IAD employees will package 174,960 meals from June 8-14, SFO employees will package 15,000 on June 10, and EWR will package 110,106 meals from June 15-19.

“We are United Together in supporting our Rise Against Hunger partnership,” said Suzi Cabo, United’s managing director of Global Community Engagement. “We’re proud of our employees and their commitment to making every action count and are thankful for their continued promise to serve communities in need.”

Rise Against Hunger meals, consisting of rice, soy protein, dried vegetables and vitamins, are packaged by volunteers and distributed around the world. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, over 500 Rise Against Hunger meal packaging events were postponed or canceled, resulting in a depletion of the organization’s meal inventory. In accordance with CDC and local government guidelines, Rise Against Hunger has adapted its meal packaging method to adhere to health guidelines and ensure the utmost safety of their volunteers. United is the first corporate partner to execute meal packaging with this adjusted method.

“We are so appreciative to United for being a part of this modified approach for Rise Against Hunger’s meal packaging events,” says Barry Mattson, Rise Against Hunger CEO. “As the World Food Programme reports, the number of people facing hunger could double in 2020 as a result of COVID-19, making our organization’s efforts more important than ever. United’s partnership is crucial as Rise Against Hunger remains committed to growing sustainable solutions and immediate hunger relief to 2 million people in need this year.”

United has partnered with Rise Against Hunger since 2016. In honor of #GivingTuesdayNow in May, United also recently donated 2,500,853 miles to Rise Against Hunger through its Miles on a Mission platform.
