Sustainability: It is Not Just a ‘Big Business’ Advantage

Small business enterprises and entrepreneurships currently represent over 50% of worldwide employment and this figure continues to expand both in the US and globally.  With more self-starters and small businesses leaders playing a larger role in the world economy, this evolving business demographic is now strategically positioned to play a significant role in the future of business sustainability.

As defined in several previous posts, ‘sustainability’ particularly in business is driven by the expansion of eco awareness and leverage of sustainability concepts across an organization, its processes, and its business relationships.  This may at first feel like a ‘big business’ advantage; however, the required level of communication and coordination may in fact be perfectly suited for small business.   Described in the article, Too Big to Succeed? explores some of the challenges facing organizations as they continue to expand.  It is these same obstacles to daily business functions, now showing up as business sustainability stumbling blocks, which give the smaller nimble companies the advantage.   As the CFO.com article specifically outlines: “Why do large companies tend to underperform smaller companies?
