Recognizing AECOM Employees Dedicated to Poverty Eradication

AECOM’s Alex Daitx helped organize clothing, book and toy donations that benefited more than 150 people in the Atlantic Forest in São Paulo, Brazil.

In honor of World Day of Social Justice, celebrated on Feb. 20, AECOM is recognizing its employees around the world who have worked to support poverty eradication efforts globally.

Alex Daitx, AECOM environmental technician, remediation services, recently led an initiative at the firm’s São Paulo office to organize donations to help an underserved community. More than 20 AECOM employees donated 130 articles of clothing and 10 toys to four families living in Iporanga in the Atlantic Forest (Mata Atlântica) in São Paulo, as well as 98 books to the Vitor Rodrigues da Motta Iporanga Municipal School in the same area.

After traveling as far as possible via car, Alex worked with the residents to wrap the donations in plastic bags in preparation for the 3-kilometer (2-mile) trek on foot to the more distant homes. Facing poor road conditions to travel to the downtown area — located up to 19 miles (30 kilometers) away — the families were extremely grateful for the personally delivered donations.

Alex delivered the book donations to the municipal school, which later sent a heartfelt thank-you letter. After thanking Alex for his service, the letter ended with the following quote (translated into English):

“Dreams that are dreamt alone can just be seen as illusions, but a dream that is dreamt together is a signal of a solution.”

Alex’s efforts impacted more than 150 people, and truly exemplify AECOM’s purpose — to positively impact lives, transform communities and make the world a better place.
