Rebuilding Together Omaha Celebrates National Rebuilding Month

This National Rebuilding Month, Rebuilding Together Omaha is completing 11 projects throughout April, culminating with their largest volunteer event on National Rebuilding Day, April 25. This year, they are focused on helping low-income neighborhoods in South Omaha, limiting the amount of projects they typically complete and providing deep critical home repairs for homeowners in-need within this community.

“With the help of dedicated volunteers, we are working to preserve south Omaha,” said Lynette Farhart, executive director of Rebuilding Together Omaha. “The personal connection and relationship they [our volunteers] build with homeowners makes them continue to come back to help.”

Twenty-four teams of volunteers will help revitalize the neighborhood with projects ranging from landscaping to kitchen renovations for a variety of homeowners in need, including elderly and veteran beneficiaries. With this year’s focus on community preservation in South Omaha, a special group of volunteers will help in these efforts — the Dinker Boys. Today, only one of the original Dinker Boys is alive, but the second-generation team is carrying on a legacy of service, set forth by their fathers, who began volunteering in the communities of Omaha 16 years ago.

The Dinker Boys are excited to serve homeowner Helen, who is a long-time resident of the neighborhood and a retired city permits employee. The Dinker Boys will replace her detraining kitchen cabinets, install new flooring that is safe and easy to maintain, repair and replace broken windows, install a new roof, and provide several accessibility modifications to the home. These critical repairs will ensure that Helen is able to live in safe and healthy home.

This project is part of National Rebuilding Month, a nationwide call to provide safe and healthy homes for America’s low-income homeowners and families across the country during the month of April leading up to National Rebuilding Day on April 25, an annual culmination of the month’s events.
