Campaign: Sustainable Energy

SAN FRANCISCO, August, 26, 2014 /3BL Media/ - The average US household consumes around 11 MWHs of electricity annually; the emissions that are generated are equivalent to cutting down 194 trees. With these figures it is important to find ways to support clean energy that helps sustain our planet. By expanding its Renewable Energy Credits (RECs) portfolio, Terrapass is pleased to be able to offer a REC option to individual customers, in addition to their carbon offsets on Terrapass.com. The offering is flexible and allows customers to perform a one-time purchase or on a monthly basis starting at $5/MWh at www.terrapass.com/balance.

“With climate change gaining more national attention, individuals want to do their part to support cleaner and sustainable energy,” says Gerardo Manalac, Senior Vice President, Green Marketing.  “We want to ensure that we can service the needs of not only our business customer, but the individual household as well, and we feel we have done that by creating flexibility that you won’t find anywhere else with a REC product.”

Both choices allow users to adjust the quantity of RECs depending on their home’s electricity (KWh) usage, which can be found on their utility bill. Consumers can select from a: a subscription service, where they choose the quantity of RECs that are billed to them monthly or a one-time RECs purchase. By purchasing RECs consumers can support clean energy and displace emissions associated with fossil fuel powered electric generation as it relates to their utility bill.

About RECs
A renewable energy credit (REC)—also sometimes referred to as a renewable energy certificate or green tag—is created for each megawatt-hour (1 MWh, or 1000 kilowatt-hours) of renewable electricity generated and delivered to the power grid.

When renewable energy is generated by wind, solar, biomass, geothermal, and certain hydropower sources, two things are created: (i) the actual electricity and (ii) the environmental benefits associated with the fact that the electricity was produced without burning fossil fuels like coal or natural gas. RECs are the way those environmental benefits or “attributes” are tracked and accounted for.
