At Bloomberg, we believe engaging with arts and culture helps strengthen and enhance communities. Through Bloomberg Philanthropies, which encompasses all of our founder’s charitable giving, we look to develop innovative partnerships and take bold approaches to increase access to key cultural institutions.

The Barbican’s Station to Station: A 30 Day Happening, a project by renowned artist Doug Aitken, is a prime example of an exhibition that engages and inspires. With support from Bloomberg Philanthropies, this “living exhibition” in London offers free interactive events, performances and immersive installations to the public every day from June 27 to July 26.

This week, employees in our London office volunteered to take 45 students from local schools to specially curated workshops with the Barbican Guildhall Creative Learning team.

Eight volunteers took 20 students currently studying design to meet with Åbäke, a UK-based design studio showcasing and creating artwork at the exhibition during the last two weeks of the month-long project. The students worked with the designers to explore different ways of translating sound into visual artwork. After a morning discussion, the students worked together as a production line to design and make a series of vinyl record sleeves for a musical piece of their choice.

Also on-site at the Barbican, seven students took part in a creative dance workshop, led by the exhibition’s current dance residents, New Movement Collective and ScanLAB projects. The 14-year old students, who are currently studying dance at school, participated in a warm up class followed by a creative workshop combining movement and the use of new technology.

These two cultural workshops form part of Bloomberg Startup, which provides hands-on learning shops for Bloomberg’s non-profit partner beneficiaries.

Make sure to visit the Bloomberg Philanthropies sponsored exhibition at the Barbican before it closes this week.
