Top 10 Reasons to Join a Beach Cleanup

Discover a few great ways to clean and green one of your favorite vacation spots!

For most of us, going to the beach means getting away from the monotony of everyday life and soaking up some rays. The beach is a perfect vacation spot because we can enjoy fresh air, swim in beautiful water and occasionally see some cool aquatic life (sharks may or not be included in this). Okay, not all beaches are as clean as they’re supposed to be, but that’s because we’ve dumped everything from motor oil to soda cans in them!

One thing that we can do to make up for polluting the oceans is to join a local beach cleanup. Beach cleanups are organized all of the time, just like the annual 30-Minute Beach Cleanup in Long Beach. This cleanup occurs on the 3rd Saturday of each month, so there are plenty of dates for residents sign up. Cleanups occur virtually anywhere with sand and sun, so try to find one that you can join the next time you’re near the shore.

Here are the top 10 reasons that you should join a beach cleanup:

10. It’s great exercise!

9. You’ll get an awesome tan (hopefully not as bad as Will Ferrell’s below).

8. Your feet will get naturally exfoliated by the sand.

7. You’ll save the lives of hundreds of animals that get caught up in the trash or accidentally swallow it.

6. You’ll be overwhelmed with the sense of community that surrounds you and your fellow beach cleaner uppers.

5. You don’t have to feel like you’re swimming in a toilet bowl, hence the giant blowup one that Greenpeace created to protest pollution of Mexican beaches. It says, “Clean Beaches Now!”

4. You’ll create a safer environment for you and the little tots that love to build sandcastles in the sun.

3. Seafood will taste much better without being subjected to the toxic pollution.

2. Listening to the crashing waves and feeling the beach air on your face is very relaxing.

1. And the Number 1 reason you should join a beach cleanup is: You won’t have to go through what these people did during this Coastal Cleanup Day 2004 ad:

Now that you know why you should join a beach cleanup, sign up for one near you!
