Plenty of apps out there help drivers carpool. So why would software giant SAP want in on the business?

The company today will unveil a cloud-based carpooling system, TwoGo by SAP, that automatically matches co-workers needing a ride to the office. SAP will license the system to businesses for an annual subscription fee.

And therein lies the difference.

Other apps tend to focus on connecting individuals or keeping carpooling schedules among groups of friends. TwoGo operates at the corporate level. Employees can register online and fill out detailed profiles specifying where they live, whether they prefer to drive or ride, and how much of a detour they’re willing to put up with to pick up passengers. The program automatically matches them with other employees nearby and notifies everyone by e-mail. Don’t like your matches? You can block them and tell the program to pair you with someone else.
