Dell Focus Area | ADVANCING SUSTAINABILITY

We're fueled by the desire to drive human progress through technology. So sustainability is – and has always been – at the heart of everything we do. We know that our world faces pressing social and environmental challenges. And we know it's not enough simply to focus on our own direct impacts. Instead, we aim to catalyze change in everything we do. We advance standards throughout our supply chain and operations. Our products and services help customers do more, consume less and make better use of resources. And we constantly innovate to transform our world for the better.

Visit dell.com/environment for more information on:

Ocean plastics: There are more than 86 million metric tons of plastic in our oceans right now. See how Dell is removing that pollution from our waters and turning it into materials for our products.

Design for environment: Innovative thinking and a lifecycle approach to how we design products and source materials are the first steps in delivering products that help you do more while minimizing your impact.

Reducing our impact: How products are made matters – to our customers, our communities and the planet. We focus on sustainable operations – using resources efficiently, managing wastes effectively and working to improve our local environment.

Green packaging and shipping: Our goal is to create a waste-free packaging experience, using recycled and renewable source materials, right-sizing to reduce waste, and making it easy for you to responsibly dispose of packaging through recycling or composting.

Reducing your footprint: Energy efficiency is a top priority across all our product lines. It helps you get the most from your energy use, which saves you money, reduce risk, and meet sustainability goals or regulations.

Recycling your Dell: We go beyond green IT — technology that itself leaves a smaller environmental footprint — to help you look at IT that enables you to address your sustainability goals and take control of your resources in a way that creates value.

Awards, Ratings & Rankings

It’s the People’s Choice for the Circular Economy. What’s Your Vote?
Each year in January we turn our eyes to the Swiss chalet of Davos, home to the World Economic Forum. They gather the foremost political, business and societal leaders to discuss and shape solutions for positive change. Their group of Young Global Leaders (YGL) focuses on overcoming barriers that stand in the way of progress, and one of their projects has been to support the annual Circulars Awards, recognizing excellence and achievement in the Circular Economy. We believe that it takes ingenuity and collaboration to drive the changes needed for a switch to the circular economy, and the Dell Circular Economy People’s Choice Award is intended to recognize just that. Along with the YGL, we are presenting six exciting companies with innovative approaches.

New Report Highlights Air Pollution Hazards & Value of Dell’s Latest Packaging Innovation
Air pollution in the Asia Pacific region is not only a major health risk, it also has damaging impacts on the environment and agricultural crop yields. A new report by the Climate and Clean Air Coalition (CCAC) and United Nations Environment Programme – titled Air Pollution in Asia and the Pacific: Science-based solutions – discusses how these impacts have significant economic consequences, affecting economic growth as well as welfare.

This recent report also calls attention to the relevancy of the recent breakthroughs by a unique partnership between Dell and Chakr Innovation, an India based start-up founded by three young engineers who believed that our quality of life depended on the quality of air we breathe.

Responsible Production & Consumption

How Dell Does Closed Loop Recycling
Sustainable design is more important than ever – and it’s driving some pretty amazing breakthroughs here at Dell through our commitment to design with circular economy principles and to use sustainable materials.

It’s America Recycles Day: Let’s Engineer Out Waste
I’ve always been drawn to examining how design affects us; the reason you like your favorite mug, the smartphone that easily guides how you swipe and click, why you like the layout of your go-to grocery store. I’m an engineer in the Experience Design Group at Dell. My team designs products and services with a focus on the quality of the user experience.

Sometimes design is done well, but frequently it’s not, and that can have significant implications for sustainability.

Supply Chain & the Circular Economy

Working Together for Water and a Cleaner Lake Taihu
A 2016 McKinsey study suggested that 90 percent of air, soil, and land impacts associated with consumer goods are supply chain-related. Meanwhile, organizations such as Business for Social Responsibility (BSR) are highlighting dynamics such as the competition among supply chains for limited water supplies, alongside other key sustainability challenges such as climate change and population growth.

We have an opportunity for real impact here, and focus on addressing both our direct water use, as well as driving positive change among our supply base.

Environment

Taking Ambition on Climate Change to the Next Level
I had the opportunity to join some of the most passionate and committed advocates for environmental sustainability – primatologist and anthropologist Jane Goodall; government leaders representing countries, states, and cities around the globe; business leaders from top companies including Apple, Bank of America, L’Oreal, Nike, Starbucks, and Salesforce; as well as representatives from the entertainment industry such as Harrison Ford and Alec Baldwin.

Environment

Reducing the Environmental Impact of Our Operations in India
We work aggressively to reduce the environmental footprint of our India facilities by developing solutions that address the country’s unique challenges to air and water quality.

We are continually looking for ways to minimize the amount of natural resources used to create and deliver Dell products and services.

EPEAT: Dell EMC PowerEdge Servers Further Validated as the Responsible Choice
Those who know the Electronic Product Environmental Assessment Tool (EPEAT) registry know it is one of the best indicators of sustainably produced electronics. The Green Electronics Council is expanding their registry to include a new server category, and customers can find multiple Dell EMC PowerEdge servers from the start.

Dell’s Latest Packaging Innovation Helps India Breathe Clean
If you’ve travelled to places like India and China recently, you know that air quality is a serious concern. Growing up in Delhi, I’ve personally witnessed the rapid decline in air quality over the years. In November 2017, Delhi’s air quality was so bad that it was similar to smoking 50 cigarettes per day.

Environment

Uniting Team Members to Clean Up the World’s Shorelines
Dell employees on almost every continent organized Shore Up events to collect plastics and other litter from local beaches, waterways and other areas.
