Amgen Biotech Experience

The Amgen Biotech Experience is an innovative science education program that provides teacher professional development, teaching materials, and professional research-grade lab equipment to middle and high schools. Each year, more than 60,000 students and hundreds of science teachers participate in the Amgen Biotech Experience to explore the methods scientists use to create biotechnology medicines. To date, the Foundation has committed over $13 million to provide hands-on molecular biology curricula to over 425,000 students across multiple U.S. states, Puerto Rico, U.K., and Ireland.

Bridging Gaps in Biotechnology, From High School to College
Three years after Enrique García-Rivera left his home school in Puerto Rico for an Amgen Scholars summer at the University of California, San Francisco, he found himself in an unexpected place: He was coaching a high school biotechnology club in Massachusetts, helping them with the Genes in Space challenge for NASA. He walked the teenagers through different types of DNA reactions that could theoretically be altered by zero-gravity.

Scaling What Works in #STEM
The cover of National Geographic magazine’s March 2015 issue is framed in my home office. The image of a staged moon landing, and five short sentences challenging common known facts serve as the backdrop for an ominous title: “The War on Science.” In the excellent article “The Age of Disbelief,” Joel Achenbach and photographer Richard Barnes quote geophysicist Marcia McNutt, now president of the National Academies of Sciences, who said, “scientific thinking has to be taught and sometimes it is not taught well,” and that struck a chord.

Amgen Foundation Expands The Amgen Biotech Experience, Bringing Total Program Reach To 900,000 High School Students By 2020
The Amgen Foundation today announced it will expand the Amgen Biotech Experience (ABE) to reach nearly 900,000 high school students by 2020. For nearly 30 years, ABE has empowered high school science teachers to implement real-world biotechnology labs in their classrooms to help their students better understand science and how it influences their daily lives. The three-week in-class lab initiative provides teachers with professional development, teaching materials and research-grade equipment to immerse students in the concepts and techniques scientists use to discover and develop medicines.

Meet David Mangus, an Amgen Biotech Experience Teacher
For almost half of his life, Dr. David Mangus worked as a research scientist. He loved working in the laboratory, trying to figure out how things work, designing experiments, and learning new things. As his own children started to grow, Dave began volunteering in their classes and schools, performing chemistry, math, and physics workshops.
