Amgen Biotech Experience

The Amgen Biotech Experience is an innovative science education program that provides teacher professional development, teaching materials, and professional research-grade lab equipment to middle and high schools. Each year, more than 60,000 students and hundreds of science teachers participate in the Amgen Biotech Experience to explore the methods scientists use to create biotechnology medicines. To date, the Foundation has committed over $13 million to provide hands-on molecular biology curricula to over 425,000 students across multiple U.S. states, Puerto Rico, U.K., and Ireland.

Meet Hamed Mirzaei, Ph.D., a Regional Medical Liaison in Oncology at Amgen
While completing his Ph.D. in molecular biology and genetics at the University of South Florida, Hamed Mirzaei had a mission – to bring a fuller understanding of science to as many people as possible. Having previously designed and taught a course called “The Public Understanding of Science,” he sought to bring this message to a broader audience. In 2014, Hamed created a nonprofit foundation for arts and sciences—a platform where anyone in the community could hear from scientists, engineers, professors, and professional artists on a range of topics.

First Year ABE Teacher Shares Her Experience With the Program
Why did you choose teaching as a career?

I joined the teaching service as I realised that teaching was very meaningful and rewarding, especially when students came back after their graduation to express how much we, as their teachers had impacted their lives and how we had influenced their career choices.

Meet the Amgen Scientist: Becky Pferdehirt, Ph.D.
Becky Pferdehirt knew she wanted to be a scientist ever since her high school biology class. Seeing a DNA band move through agarose gel got her hooked on discovery, and she became driven toward a scientific career that she hoped would “leave the world better than I had found it,” she says.

A Local Boston Scientist Making a Big Impact in a Global Biotech World
“My teacher is amazing. This is my second year speaking English for the first time, and she has provided me with help to improve my English skills while learning biological concepts and lab skills. She promotes multiculturalism and diversity, and she deserves some recognition for her hard work.” -Student of Mary Jo Renear at East Longmeadow High School in Western Massachusetts

Nurturing Teachers and Giving Back in Puerto Rico
Héctor L Ayala-Del-Río recently received an unexpected thank you card: It was from a local high school science teacher, explaining that she was having a challenging time in her classroom, but how a recent event that Ayala-Del-Río and his team organized made all the difference. She had attended an Amgen Biotech Experience (ABE) teacher appreciation event at the Caguas Science Center, and the act of being recognized “made her feel that everything was worth it and that she should keep going,” says Ayala-Del-Río of the University of Puerto Rico-Humacao.

In Depth With a Program Powerhouse: 12 Years of Amgen Scholars With Patty Phelps
Over the past 12 years, Patty Phelps has mentored more than 250 students in her role as faculty advisor for the Amgen Scholars Program at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). Among those students is: a young woman who came from the University of Washington in bioengineering and is now pursuing a Ph.D. at the University of California, San Diego; a hard-working young man who returned to UCLA for graduate school in neuroscience; and the wonderful UCLA students who each year welcomed those from out-of-town and developed long-term friendships.
