 # Walmart Strengthens Focus on Environmental Responsibility

Sustainability is a constant work-in-progress with no finish line. The best that governments, companies and organizations can do is to keep setting higher goals, and staying focused on achieving them in a time-bound manner. Walmart had set three environment goals in 2005, and nine years down the line, the company has made significant progress toward achieving these goals, but a lot still remains to be done.

Almost 25 percent of Walmart’s power needs across the world are now served by renewable resources. The company uses multiple renewable energy sources, including wind, solar, hydro and biogas. The company diverts 82 percent of the waste from US stores from landfills. The pace at which Walmart evaluates products for sustainability has been intensified with the development of a comprehensive Sustainability Index.
