FAIRBANKS — The University of Alaska Fairbanks is launching a competition to create a new app for measuring energy efficiency on campus.

The app, which could be used with smartphones or tablets, will be developed with funding from a $40,000 grant from the Verizon Foundation. The foundation is tied to the Verizon telecommunications company, which entered the Alaska market this year.

The app is envisioned as a way to boost the visibility of energy-saving measures at UAF, which has pushed sustainability efforts on campus in recent years. Those efforts include the construction of the Sustainable Village, a new student housing complex that uses a variety of new technologies to save energy.

Although the app that will be developed is still undefined, the goal will be to provide more access about energy consumption. A UAF panel will hear proposals before selecting candidates to develop an app.
