 # Verizon Contest Will Ignite Students’ Interest in STEM Fields

In a tight employment market, it may be surprising to learn that there’s a gap between the fastest-growing jobs and the supply of qualified candidates.

Jobs in “STEM” fields – science, technology, engineering and math – have grown three times faster than other fields in the U.S. And that trend is expected to continue in the future.

Yet the number of graduates in STEM fields is not keeping pace with this growth, particularly among minorities, females and students in low-income families. This hinders employers of all sizes and types, as these skills are fast becoming table stakes in order to participate in our information economy.

To spur student interest in STEM, the Verizon Foundation and the Technology Student Association have issued the third Verizon Innovative App Challenge to middle- and high-school students across the country.
