This project was a total renovation of an existing, five-story academic building into new consolidated offices for the Letters and Science faculty. The project completed LEED-NC certification on June 13, 2013 with 46 points awarded. Leonardo Academy was the LEED consultant and its involvement in the project spanned more than two years from a pre-design charrette to the certification at the end of the comprehensive commissioning process. The designer, Strang, Inc. and the prime contractor, J.P. Cullen & Sons, Inc., were critical partners in the success of this LEED-NC project. The project followed the State of Wisconsin’s sustainability guidelines and campus’s desire to seek the LEED-NC Certified level of performance. The project is distinguished for having achieved an energy performance estimated to be 24 percent lower than the ASHRAE 90.1 code baseline. The project diverted 83 percent of the building’s construction waste stream through waste reduction and recycling programs and salvaged over 86 percent of the pre-existing structural frame and shell. The materials were selected for their high recycled content and local sourcing.
