Smartphones expanded out interaction with digital technology thanks to the endless possibilities that specialist apps offer to users. Put this to socially responsible use, and the results can be nothing short of amazing.  
  
The Verizon Foundation recently launched an App Challenge for middle and high school students all over the U.S. Their briefing was to develop mobile applications that address a need or problem in their schools or communities.  
  
The winners have already been announced and range from encouraging a community to do more recycling, to making it easier for students with disabilities to take notes in class, to identifying invasive plant species in lakes.  
  
Besides creating social good, the competition was designed to boost student engagement and interest in science, technology, engineering and math, or STEM. The students were asked to use their STEM skills to design app concepts that provided real-world solutions for issues in their communities or schools.
