 # The Ray Deploys Natural Capital at WSDOT’S Scatter Creek Site

 

##### Demonstrating the value of feeding the ecosystem while supporting public infrastructure

Through [The Ray's](http://www.theray.org) ongoing collaboration with the [Washington State Department of Transportation](https://us.list-manage.com/Uxb7jsXfCfF?e=6dc7bd49c3&c2id=2d6b62453a38a53759514f74a853a9b7&m=NEV8WiG8sL3hqd5UwbKofX_w7WwbOD_jgRVzlH-xSWeA2LTFG-mkusABGyUV) (WSDOT), they've recently deployed advanced natural capital solutions at the Scatter Creek Rest Area, demonstrating how active transit corridors can perform double duty for local ecosystems and public infrastructure.

**Targeted Wildlife Support:** The project demonstrates how federally protected species (in this case, the regionally threatened Mazama pocket gopher) can safely coexist with active transportation corridors.

**Botanical Design for Ecological Health:** Custom-engineered native seed mixes were specifically adapted to the site's unique soil profile. Deep-rooted plants anchor the roadside, optimizing natural stormwater runoff, and providing long-term forage for local pollinators.

**Smart Environmental Monitoring:** The Ray and WSDOT integrated [PheNode](https://us.list-manage.com/LKN51mKTKTT?e=6dc7bd49c3&c2id=2d6b62453a38a53759514f74a853a9b7&m=RspxpLyg3wTOJ_cbsJSR8K3FJklHUQiKooKdbMbB4uCpyzm7zo_3REvzN_tu)® automated sensor systems from Agrela Ecosystems. The on-site units continuously stream microclimate data, allowing the team to track real-time soil and weather conditions as the habitat develops.
