Paul Dewar, the New Democratic Party Member of Parliament for the riding of Ottawa Centre, is lobbing for the passage of Bill C-486, an act respecting corporate practices relating to the extraction, processing, purchase, trade and use of conflict minerals from the Great Lakes Region of Africa.

Much like the United States’ Section 1502 of the Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act, Bill C-486 will require Canadian companies to exercise due diligence in respect of the exploitation and trading of designated minerals originating in the Great Lakes Region of Africa. The goal of the Bill is to ensure that no rebel organization that is engaged in illegal activities benefits from any transaction involving conflict minerals.

The campaign has issued an [online petition](http://petition.ndp.ca/conflictfree) to residents of Canada to help in the adoption of the NDP’s Conflict Minerals Act. To date, the petition has been signed 2560 times.
