October 8, 2013 /3BL Media/ - The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) last week [recognized](http://energy.gov/articles/us-manufacturers-save-1-billion-11-million-tons-co2-through-energy-efficiency-investments?utm_source=PA932&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=ProgressAlerts) UTC for slashing energy consumption across its U.S. operations by nearly 30 percent between 2005 and 2012. UTC was one of five companies honored for achieving aggressive energy-reduction targets set as part of voluntary participation in the DOE’s Better Plants program.

“We are proud to be recognized by the Department of Energy for this achievement because our employees have worked hard to identify and implement energy-saving projects across our facilities,” said Rick Bennett, Vice President, UTC Environment, Health & Safety (EH&S). “Energy conservation is critical to UTC’s success – it’s a driver for improved productivity. Every dollar we save is a dollar we can put toward delighting our customers and keeping our employees safe and healthy.”

UTC was among the first companies to sign on as a Better Plants Partner when the program launched in 2009. Partners pledge to reduce energy use in their facilities by 25 percent over 10 years, and in return they receive DOE support to achieve the goal.

“Better Plants was a great fit for us because it was the first government-led energy-reduction program designed specifically for manufacturing,” said Sean West, UTC EH&S Manager. “The program objectives were consistent with UTC’s own sustainability goals and directly in line with the type of energy improvements we were making.”

Using the year 2005 as a baseline, UTC committed to a 25 percent energy reduction by 2015 under the Better Plants program. The company met and exceeded that goal at the end of 2012.
