(3BL Media/Just Means) - ​Mobile gadgets have created ​a massive source of electronic waste (e-waste). Experts say ​each person ​generates 15 pounds of e-waste ​every year​. ​And they sell like hot cakes, those ubiquitous gadgets. ​Only in 2013, more than 1.8 billion phones were sold worldwide according to data collected by Gartner.

And the figure is likely to go up. When Apple announced its new iPhone 6 and 6 Plus, it received more than four million pre-orders within 24 hours. It's a hell of a lot of phones - and afterwards, e-waste.​ It is imperative,​ then​,​ that we put all the e-waste generated by those products on a green track and divert​ it ​from landfills as they are highly toxic.

Fortunately, some companies are doing just that—that is, creating opportunities for the consumer to dispose of their electronic goods in a planet-friendly way.

Outerwall, which creates kiosks within retail spaces, said recently at the Clinton Global Initiative’s Tenth Annual Meeting, that it expects to collect at least two million pounds worth of mobile gadgets and accessories over the next three years.
