Springer, who has struggled with stuttering since he was a child, joined the Stuttering Association for the Young (SAY) as a spokesperson. “Some people have blue eyes, some have blonde hair, and some people stutter,” Springer said on SAY.org. “I’ve never let it hold me back and with SAY, I want to help kids who stutter build the confidence they need to pursue their dreams.” Since joining, Springer has held events and speaking engagements to share his story and inspire children who stutter. The second annual George Springer All-Star Bowling Benefit was held June 2 at Lucky Strike bowling alley in Houston. Proceeds from the event support Camp SAY, a summer camp for children who stutter. Camp SAY is for children and teens ages 8-18, and welcomes their young family members and friends who want to share the camp experience together. Camp SAY is built around a traditional summer camp experience, while providing specially designed activities to meet each child’s individual goals and needs. Springer’s teammates and members of the Astros staff also attended the benefit. Jose Altuve, Carlos Correa, Jake Marisnick, Scott Feldman, Tony Kemp, Mike Fiers and Lance McCullers were present to support Springer’s efforts. Springer enthusiastically addressed the crowd at the bowling alley. His message encouraged children at the event, assuring them that they are not the only ones who struggle with stuttering. The Houston Astros star lets his on-field performance speak for itself, but off the field, he’s speaking up for everyone else.
