The site's Indigenous Scholarship program provides financial assistance to recipients and encourages them to use what they learn to make a meaningful difference in their communities. El Abra presented the awards during a special WebEx ceremony with site representatives due to precautions surrounding COVID-19. This year, the majority of the recipients are women, with most coming from the indigenous Andean villages of Ollague, Chiu Chiu, Conchi Viejo and Toconce in the Alto El Loa Province. El Abra launched the Indigenous Scholarship program in 2004. Scholarship recipients are selected by a committee that includes government authorities, community leaders and scholars.
