Finalists Announced for Impact Awards, Recognizing Outstanding Social Good Crowdfunding

January 21, 2014 /3BL Media/ -, the global crowdfunding platform for social good projects, has announced the finalists for the StartSomeGood Impact Award, which recognises crowdfunding campaigns that have created outstanding positive impact for their communities. 

"As far as we're aware, this is the first award that recognises crowdfunding projects not just for their fundraising success, but for the positive social impact they've gone on to make in the world," said StartSomeGood CEO Tom Dawkins.

"Enabling changemakers to create better futures for their communities is what motivates our work at StartSomeGood, and we're awed by what these finalists have managed to achieve."

With projects spanning the globe, and organisations ranging from social enterprises, to nonprofits and community groups, the finalists for the Impact Award represent the diversity and caliber of social change projects that are benefiting from crowdfunding. 

"Crowdfunding was so crucial to the success of the Tinker Tour. Getting new and existing supporters involved and excited gave momentum to our whole project." says Mary Beth Tinker of Tinker Tour who raised $50,000 through crowdfunding. 

The 2014 finalists are: 

Afghanistan-American Friendship Foundation who have used the money from their campaign to build wells and provide clean water to more than 5000 people in Afghanistan.  

Jhatkaa, an initiative driven by social innovators from India, who launched an online citizen empowerment platform which has been used to campaign for the decriminalisation of gay sex, against rape, for education rights and more. 

Kinyei who partnered with locals in Battambang, Cambodia to build a locally owned and staffed cafe providing much-needed training and employment opportunities to Cambodian youth.  

LearnToLive who used the funds from three successful crowdfunding campaigns to build a mobile health clinic which travels to rural areas of Indonesia and Laos, providing much-needed health services. 

The Rhythm Hut, an Australian music community centre who were facing eviction from their premises. They raised $25,000 to secure a new building and rescue their music programs which serve at-risk communities such as the homeless, alcoholics and substance abusers. 

Tinker Tour who embarked on a road trip across the United States with civil rights legend Mary Beth Tinker, of the famous Tinker v Demoines case. So far they've made 58 stops to spread the message of free speech and civil rights. 

The winning venture will receive $1000 provided by ethical and social investment company, Forming Circles, will be featured in an interview for Crowdfund Beat with Devin D. Thorpe and have access to StartSomeGood's advisory panel. The winner will be be determined by public vote on StartSomeGood's Facebook page.
