Capital One Bank's Book By Book Program Engages The Public In Donating 50,000 Books To Children In Need

October 29, 2013 /3BL Media/ - Studies show that a child’s access to books — both at school and in the home — is a key predictor of their future academic success and sets the stage for increased economic opportunity. Unfortunately, in under resourced communities throughout the U.S., gaining access to quality books is a challenge for many schools and families. In an effort to deliver age-appropriate books to students and schools in need, Capital One Bank®, in partnership with The Heart of America Foundation® and Communities In Schools, has launched Book by Book. The digital campaign, now in its second year, will engage the public in helping donate up to 50,000 books to schools and homes across the country.
The Book by Book campaign will run from October 28 to November 25, 2013. During that time, Capital One Bank will donate a book for every new Like on the Capital One Investing for Good Facebook Page, up to 50,000. In addition, book lovers across the U.S. can enter for a chance to win a custom children’s home library or reading nook in their own home created by designer and television host Taniya Nayak.
“Early reading and language skills are fundamental building blocks for learning and success. Developing a lifelong love of reading fuels the imagination and can open doors to a world of possibilities for children,” said Ken Kido, Executive Vice President, Local Distribution, Capital One Bank. “It all starts with that first great book. Capital One and The Heart of America Foundation have worked together since 2001 to help foster a love of reading in students across the U.S. and have put 1.3 million books valued at over $10.5 million into the hands of more than 564,000 children through 64 READesign® Library Makeover and Reading Corner projects and hundreds of literacy related events.

Through the Book by Book program, Capital One is also building on its partnership with Communities In Schools, which provides comprehensive social, behavioral, health, and basic needs support to America’s most at-risk students. Capital One will work together with Communities In Schools and First Book to disseminate these new books to children and schools most in need.

The Book by Book grand prize custom children’s home library, valued at over $17,000, includes 150 age-appropriate books to stock the shelves in the winner’s beautiful new space. In addition to the grand prize, entrants have a chance to win one of four weekly Library-in-a-Box prize packages. The packages include two boxes of books: one for the winner to keep for a young reader in his or her life and another box to give away to a local school or youth organization in their community.
