 # AEP Warns of Downed Line Dangers During Storm Restoration

 Jul 3, 2012 6:00 PM ET

  Campaign: [2012 Storm](/node/28791)

The June 29 storms that impacted much of the East coast and AEP's service service territory brought power lines and poles down everywhere. As our crews restore power, please stay away from ALL downed lines. You can't hear, see or smell electricity, so assume all downed lines are live and energized and stay away. Report downed lines to 911 and your local power company. Learn more about the dangers of downed lines with this [factsheet](http://www.aep.com/citizenship/safetyhealth/docs/PublicSafety_FactSheet_downedlines-AEP.pdf).

**[AEP - American Electric Power](AEP-American-Electric-Power)**
AEP ranks among the nation's largest generators of electricity, owning nearly 38,000 megawatts of generating capacity in the U.S. AEP also owns the nation's largest electricity transmission system, a nearly 39,000-mile network that includes more 765 kilovolt extra-high voltage transmission lines than all other U.S. transmission systems combined.

AEP's utility units operate as AEP Ohio, AEP Texas, Appalachian Power (in Virginia, West Virginia), AEP Appalachian Power (in Tennessee), Indiana Michigan Power, Kentucky Power, Public Service of Oklahoma, and Southwestern Electric Power Company (in Arkansas, Louisiana and east Texas).
