 # AEP to Retire more than 5,100 MW of Coal-Fired Capacity

 Apr 26, 2012 8:00 PM ET

Campaign: [AEP Publishes its 2012 Corporate Accountability Report](/node/26827) AEP has or will retire more than 5,100 MW of coal-fired capacity to comply with new environmental rules and other factors, including low natural gas prices and aging infrastructure. The transition to a more sustainable fuel mix will also reduce greenhouse gas emissions by reducing AEP’s coal-fired generating capacity.

For decades, one of the lowest-cost resources to produce electricity in the United States has been coal. It has provided customers with reliable, affordable power and is an important source of jobs.

**[AEP - American Electric Power](AEP-American-Electric-Power)**
AEP ranks among the nation's largest generators of electricity, owning nearly 38,000 megawatts of generating capacity in the U.S. AEP also owns the nation's largest electricity transmission system, a nearly 39,000-mile network that includes more 765 kilovolt extra-high voltage transmission lines than all other U.S. transmission systems combined.

AEP's utility units operate as AEP Ohio, AEP Texas, Appalachian Power (in Virginia, West Virginia), AEP Appalachian Power (in Tennessee), Indiana Michigan Power, Kentucky Power, Public Service of Oklahoma, and Southwestern Electric Power Company (in Arkansas, Louisiana and east Texas).
