 # AEP Advocates Efficient Use of Energy

 May 9, 2012 12:00 PM ET

Campaign: [AEP Publishes its 2012 Corporate Accountability Report](/node/26827)

AEP has always encouraged its customers to use energy wisely, but a decade ago, energy efficiency was not viewed as an important resource.

Energy efficiency is an increasingly important priority for our stakeholders and for good reason – customers benefit by saving money, the environment benefits from fewer greenhouse gas emissions and AEP benefits by having a diverse resource portfolio to serve customers. That is why energy efficiency and demand response are now integrated into our resource planning and are reflected in our total resource portfolio.

AEP set internal goals to reduce demand by 1,000 MW and energy consumption by 2,250,000 MWh by the end of 2012, which were influenced by stakeholders. Through the end of 2011, we have achieved 1,972,000 MWh of reductions and 716 MW of our demand reduction goal. **[AEP - American Electric Power](AEP-American-Electric-Power)**
AEP ranks among the nation's largest generators of electricity, owning nearly 38,000 megawatts of generating capacity in the U.S. AEP also owns the nation's largest electricity transmission system, a nearly 39,000-mile network that includes more 765 kilovolt extra-high voltage transmission lines than all other U.S. transmission systems combined.

AEP's utility units operate as AEP Ohio, AEP Texas, Appalachian Power (in Virginia, West Virginia), AEP Appalachian Power (in Tennessee), Indiana Michigan Power, Kentucky Power, Public Service of Oklahoma, and Southwestern Electric Power Company (in Arkansas, Louisiana and east Texas).
