New York Cares is the City’s largest volunteer organization, running volunteer programs for 1,300 nonprofits, city agencies and public schools. More than 56,000 people volunteer with New York Cares, and its programs help 400,000 disadvantaged New Yorkers. Addison aims to really make a difference by organizing two key volunteering events in 2013, and to participate in the ‘Winter Coat Drive.’ The summer volunteering event took place on June 21st with 25 Addison employees dedicating their time and creativity by painting a mural at PS 96M – Joseph C. Lanzetta, a community-based PK-8 School in Harlem. A few from the group also took it upon themselves to paint the railings at the front of the school. This greatly improved the aesthetics of the building, much to the pleasure of the local neighbors. The Addisonites came together in creating a color scheme, planning a strategic approach and building camaraderie as a team outside of the office. The end result was a beautiful, vibrant mural, stretching across two large walls in the playground. The children were extremely excited to see the mural come together, and it will now become a fond school memory for all current and future students. To round off the day, and to continue the celebrations of Addison turning 50, the group retired to ‘Harlem Tavern’ for soul food, live music and drinks in the garden. All in all, the summer 2013 volunteering event was a great success, setting a high standard for the next one, due to happen in the fall.
