Summary

Xylem Watermark sponsored 5 projects as part of Planet Water Foundation’s Project 24 this year, an ambitious undertaking on World Water Day to build 24 clean water filtration systems (AquaTowers) in 24 communities in just 24 hours. These Watermark-sponsored projects reached a total of 5,000 people across communities in India, Indonesia, Cambodia, the Philippines and Puerto Rico, including the nearly 1,000 children who attend the participating schools. Twenty-four Xylem volunteers assisted in the construction of the community-based water systems in India, the Philippines and Puerto Rico. These AquaTowers will bring clean water to the world's most disadvantaged communities.

As with many other communities in the east of Lombok, Repuk Bunut Village struggles to access clean water. For the more than 1,250 residents in this village, only 14 wells are actively used to meet the daily water needs. The water is dirty and harmful when consumed. Unfortunately, there is no other choice but to use the contaminated water, which can lead to illnesses that greatly affect the education of local students.

Students do not bathe frequently, causing skin diseases, and they have minimal knowledge of the importance of clean, safe water. This combination is a visible challenge for the young generation, and it will be very hard for the generation that follows them if guidance on how to maintain personal health and hygiene is not provided.

"As the principal here, I have been trying to provide water facilities for the school, but to meet the needs of 226 people every day is very hard because there is no budget from the government for it. We have told the students to bring water from their house, but sometimes they do not do it because the water they bring to school is the same from the well." – Sulhanudin, S.Pd.SD, Headmaster

Access to clean water and water hygiene education are both necessary to provide these chidlren with a better, healthier life. The AquaTower provided to this community by Xylem Watermark and Planet Water Foundation during Project 24 will help to bring that needed change.
