HOUSTON, Jan. 15, 2014 /3BL Media/ Waste Management (NYSE:WM) today announced that its Sustainability Services division has launched a new web-training portal for healthcare customers to educate their employees on health and safety issues surrounding medical waste.

“Knowledge of environmental health and safety regulations is crucial for any safe working environment. Our courses are designed to help educate healthcare staff about various regulations,” said Tom Carpenter, director of Waste Management’s Sustainability Services division.

Carpenter said that taking a proactive approach to training healthcare staff creates the awareness necessary for a safe working environment.

“We’re proud to launch a new training tool that will provide educational information to our healthcare customers on medical waste issues.”

Carpenter explained that the training provides information to healthcare customers on U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations.

The training, which includes around-the-clock access to the new web portal, provides:

  • Information on OSHA’s Bloodborne Pathogens Standard
  • Access to OSHA’s Exposure Control Plan tools to address risk
  • An introduction to OSHA’s Hazard Communication Standard
  • An overview of OSHA’s Means of Egress Standard, Emergency Action and Fire Prevention Plans
  • Information related to OSHA’s Recording and Reporting of Injuries and Illnesses regulations

The tool also gives customers access to a wide range of materials to create customized training programs, such as a printable guidance manual, self-paced training modules, tailored evaluations, and safety audit and planning reference guides.

To support this educational training, Waste Management’s Sustainability Services group will provide an online OSHA Guidance Manual to customers containing additional information about various healthcare regulations and risk exposure.

Waste Management Sustainability Services is developing additional educational training programs for healthcare customers, including Hazard Communication, Department of Transportation, Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response and many others, which the company anticipates launching in the upcoming months.
