Upcoming Sustainability Dialogue ::: Renewable Energy in Canada
Date: Monday July 18, 2011
Time: 1:00-2:00PM EST

Renewable energy is growing faster than any other source of energy globally. In 2008, for the first time global investments in new renewable electricity outpaced traditional forms of electricity generation (coal, natural gas and nuclear). Canada has tremendous renewable energy resources, and much existing infrastructure to support a transition to a renewable energy future, but is still only scratching the surface of its national potential.

In this discussion, Dr. Tim Weis, the Pembina Institute’s Director of Renewable Energy Policy, will discuss highlights from recent studies the Institute has released on the potential role for renewable energy expansion in Canada, with a particular focus on Ontario and Alberta (http://www.pembina.org/re).  Dr. Weis will discuss some of the challenges facing renewable energy development in Canada, as well as some of Canada’s leaders at national, provincial and municipal levels. During this dialogue participants will:

•    Learn more about the status of renewable energy development globally
•    Understand key options and barriers to renewable energy development in Canada
•    Be introduced to how some municipalities are finding creative ways to foster renewable energy at a local level
