(3BLMedia/theCSRfeed) Mississagua, - June 30, 2010 - UPS contributes $1 million to United Way in 2009

United Way of Canada - Centraide Canada (UWC-CC) recognized UPS Canada with the prestigious Thanks a Million award, presented at their annual general meeting earlier today, at the Fairmont Royal York Hotel in downtown Toronto.

This is the ninth year in a row that UWC-CC Thanks a Million award has been presented to UPS Canada. The award honours organizations and unions that, through corporate generosity and the combined efforts of their employees and members, contribute $1,000,000 or more to United Ways - Centraides across the country.

"UPS is an avid supporter of United Way's countless efforts to build and better our communities," said Mike Tierney, UPS Canada President. "Our employees continue to make a personal commitment to support the essential services United Way provides to the communities where we live and work." Tierney is also the Chair of Volunteer Canada's Corporate Council on Volunteering, which is dedicated to helping businesses develop and execute volunteer programs within their organizations.

UPS Canada has been a major contributor and strong partner with United Way since 1983. Each UPS facility across Canada participates in an annual United Way pledge campaign, with many fundraisers held throughout the year. In 2009, UPS Canada employee campaigns raised more than $1.3 million. Those UPS contributions help United Way improve the quality of neighbourhood social services, ensure opportunities for youth, support programs and services that provide health care and help newcomers integrate into their new communities. Since 1982, UPS and UPS employees have contributed nearly $1 billion to United Way agencies around the world.

"The United Way – Centraide Movement depends on the generosity and support of community partners to improve quality of life in Canadian communities," said Al Hatton, President and Chief Executive Officer, UWC-CC. "Particularly with the tumultuous economic climate of the past year, we could not have raised an impressive $487 million for communities without the help of UPS employees. They are to be commended for their commitment to be a part of the United Way mission and to help improve lives."

Since its founding in 1907, UPS has built a legacy as a caring and responsible corporate citizen. Whether through its involvement with United Way, The UPS Foundation or volunteerism, UPS provides assistance to programs that provide long-term solutions to community needs.
