I’m reporting from the Business for Social Responsibility Conference 2014, held at the Grand Hyatt Hotel in New York City. Hundreds of CSR and sustainability professionals, CEOs, brand executives, entrepreneurs, investors, and other interested parties gathered to discuss topics related to this year’s theme, “Transparency and Transformation.”

There was a lot of talk about change: the rapid pace of it, and the need for more of it, and even faster. This sense of urgency was best stated in a comment by Pepsico Chairman and CEO Indra Nooyi in her keynote address: “being good enough is not enough.” Nooyi described transformation, as executed through the company’s “Performance with a Purpose” program, not as an achievement to be measured within a defined time frame, but as an unending process.

Specific hot topics at the conference included trends in reporting, transparency in human rights in the workplace, responsible supply chains, and innovative financing. Sessions on health issues were a special feature, ranging from a speech on responsible business by Sir Andrew Witty, CEO of GSK, to a passionate plea by the actor Jeffrey Wright, a call to action to fight Ebola. Including big pharma and grassroots advocacy to represent healthcare was business as usual at a conference, which included all levels of business, from global corporations to local New York City startups. It also brought together all sectors, from apparel to food, from finance to retail, from philanthropy to tech.

That’s the kind of innovative, catalyzing gathering that BSR convenes at its annual conferences. This 2014 edition was insightful, compelling and finally, inspiring, as always.

I’m John Howell for 3BL Media.
