Supporting Our Heroes by Reuniting Best Friends

Many of the dogs who serve alongside U.S. military overseas are left behind when military units return to the U.S. Most servicemen and -women who act as handlers and forge deep bonds with military working dogs (MWDs) request to bring their companions home so they can adopt them. However, a lack of funding often makes this difficult.

In 2016 Crown Media donated $100,000 toward programs such as American Humane, which works to help bring these dogs back to the U.S., support military families and promote animal well-being.

The financial support helps to ensure that MWDs can retire in comfort with the veteran with whom they served.

“Military working dogs are nothing short of heroes,” says Crown Media President and CEO Bill Abbott. “When these dogs retire, it is only right they be brought home and allowed to live out their days with the veterans they so loyally served.”

Crown Media also began partnering with American Humane on another project, Shelter-to-Service. This project identifies shelter dogs scheduled to be euthanized and trains them to become lifesaving service animals for military veterans suffering from post-traumatic stress and traumatic brain injury.
