Denver, Colo., October 9, 2013 /3BL Media/ - Subaru of America, Inc. (SOA) presented Mike Shaw Subaru with their award for environmental stewardship: the Subaru Eco-Friendly Dealer Award. This award is given to Subaru dealers after they meet the requirements of a point-based inspection in five areas of conservation: energy efficiency, water conservation, recycling, waste management, and community involvement.

For the dealership to achieve Subaru Eco-Friendly Dealer status, they organized an environmental team comprised of individuals from each department. The team planned and implemented the necessary changes and upgrades to the facility. “It was truly a team effort that will have a longstanding impact on the dealership,” said Dominic Scrivner, Managing Partner of Mike Shaw Subaru.

Dealers must meet the requirements in these five key areas:

Energy Efficiency

To reduce energy consumption, Mike Shaw Subaru placed occupancy sensors in areas with low traffic, installed automatic door closers, and purchased Energy Star equipment. Ceiling fans, programmable thermostats, LED lot lights and energy efficient window coating were installed.  Mike Shaw Subaru also plans to add a temperature regulation system to each of their air conditioning units to reduce energy costs during the summer months.

Water Conservation

The dealership reduced water consumption by installing low flow faucet & toilets and water efficient landscaping.

Recycling

By recycling material such as paper, metal, cardboard and plastic, the dealership helped divert massive amounts of material from landfills. Mike Shaw Subaru recycles ink cartridges, scrap metal, tires, oil filters, light bulbs, coolant, batteries and Thermofluids.

Waste Management

Local, state and federal law requires the proper storage and disposal of items that may be harmful to the environment. Beyond the legal requirements, many substances can cause significant impact to the environment. The dealership ensures proper disposal of waste material such as oil, coolant, batteries and tires. Mike Shaw Subaru uses waste oil to heat areas of the Service Department during the winter.

Community Involvement

Caring about the environment extends beyond the dealership. The employees are involved in community programs focused on preserving and protecting the environment. Mike Shaw Subaru actively supports several community organizations including the Denver Area Boy Scouts.
