This summer, over 3,300 Shire colleagues formed teams, set goals and encouraged each other to make healthy choices as part of Shire’s inaugural pilot of the Virgin Pulse Global Challenge. Over the course of the 100-day challenge, Shire colleagues walked over 1.5 million miles collectively, and individually averaged over 14,100 steps daily. That’s the equivalent of walking around the world more than 60 times and burning more than 154 million calories, the equivalent of over 600,000 slices of cake.

Most importantly, by the end of the Challenge more than 70% of Shire participants reported step counts that were in the active to very active level – this figure was at only 17% prior to starting the Challenge. Throughout the Challenge, Shire colleagues demonstrated an outstanding level of energy, enthusiasm and commitment towards developing new healthy lifestyle habits.

The Global Challenge, a virtual journey that encourages physical activity, healthy eating, stress resilience, sleep quality and development of healthy habits, was piloted this year at Shire as a part of the company’s global wellbeing program.  Through the global wellbeing program and initiatives like the Global Challenge, Shire is committed to creating a workplace that supports physical, emotional and financial wellbeing so that employees can bring their best selves to work.

Shire is committed to supporting the total wellbeing of employees, including nutrition, disease prevention, emotional support, stress management, and even financial planning.
