June 14, 2013 /3BL Media/ - Teck’s 2012 Sustainability Report, Generations, is now available online at www.teck.com/sustainability.

2012 marks the 100th anniversary of Teck’s founding. The theme of the 2012 report, Generations, speaks to the generations of employees who have contributed to Teck’s sustainability and to the sustainability of the mining industry around the world. The theme also reflects the future generations that will enjoy a better quality of life because of mining and the products it helps create.

In 2012, Teck continued to advance its sustainability strategy by acting on implementation plans and taking measurable steps towards achieving its goals in six focus areas: Community, Our People, Water, Biodiversity, Energy, and Materials Stewardship.

Highlights from the 2012 report include:

  • Achieving the lowest total reportable injury frequency and the lowest number of serious incidents in Teck’s history
  • Being appointed to the Dow Jones Sustainability World Index for the third year in a row
  • Contributing more than $23 million to over 1,000 charitable organizations
  • Advancing a water quality strategy in British Columbia’s Elk Valley, including beginning construction of a new water treatment facility
  • Generating 57,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide-equivalent credits at the 30% Teck-owned Wintering Hills Wind Power Facility in Alberta
  • Completing a review of recycling practices across Teck’s operations
  • Being named the top Canadian company and top mining company worldwide on the Global 100 Most Sustainable Corporations list by Corporate Knights

The report complies with the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) at the A+ application level.  The GRI application level, selected indicators, and alignment with the International Council on Mining and Metals’ 10 Sustainable Development Framework Principles were independently reviewed by Deloitte LLP.
