August 14, 2013 /3BL Media/ - Norfolk Southern Corporation has released its 2013 sustainability report, “Connections.”
Highlights of the company’s sixth annual report include Norfolk Southern’s reductions in greenhouse gas emissions, progress toward reforestation of 10,000 acres in the Mississippi Alluvial Valley, installation of idle-reduction and other computer-based technologies in locomotives, hiring of more than 2,400 people in 2012, and record charitable giving of nearly $7 million to communities served by the company.
“As a leading freight carrier, our railroad must invest in the communities we serve, and we must be a responsible steward of our environment,” company CEO Wick Moorman says in a letter in the report. “Adherence to these two principles has enhanced and affirmed our understanding of the connections between our long-term business success and the health of our communities, our environment, and our employees.”
The exclusively online report is more interactive and user friendly than previous reports and features a Report Builder function and greater access on handheld tablet devices.
The report also profiles employees who have helped Norfolk Southern accomplish sustainability successes throughout its 22-state network.
