Lafarge has a long-standing approach and commitment to sustainable development. This approach is constantly shared and challenged thanks to joint work with key stakeholders.

Published annually, the Lafarge Sustainability Report reached the A+ GRI level for the third consecutive year. This tenth issue provides an accurate and measurable outlook of the Group’s commitments and achievements in areas such as environment, social issues and sustainable construction. This transparency-oriented reporting approach underlies Lafarge’s sustainability ambitions since 2001.

In 2010, Lafarge continued its efforts and advances, among them:

  • employee lost time injury frequency rate reduced to 0.76.

  • extension of its African HIV/AIDS and malaria best practice programme to major developing countries (Russia and Ukraine).

  • CO2 emissions per ton of cement worldwide reduced by 21.7 per cent compared to 1990.

  • Screening of 94% of Lafarge’s active quarries according to criteria validated by WWF International.

Besides accounts of these major advances made during the year, the report also includes practical case studies, comments from Lafarge’s stakeholder panel, and an external assurance statement by Ernst & Young.
