WALTHAM, Mass., Nov. 8, 2012 /3BL Media /PRNewswire/ - Raytheon Company (NYSE: RTN) has been recognized for its commitment to community in The Civic 50 – the first scientific evaluation to single out S&P 500 companies that best invest their time, talent and resources to improve the quality of life where they do business.

The Civic 50 survey was conducted by the National Conference on Citizenship (NCoC) and Points of Light, leading national experts on civic engagement, and published in the November 12 issue of Bloomberg Businessweek. The ranking recognizes companies for transformational corporate citizenship efforts and encourages businesses to become innovative in their approach. Raytheon was evaluated on several elements, including leadership, measurement and strategy, design, "employee civic health," community partnerships, cause alignment and transparency.

"Raytheon's commitment to corporate responsibility is steadfast and deep – whether we are sparking student enthusiasm in science, technology, engineering and math; supporting our armed services; or contributing to our local communities," said William H. Swanson, Chairman and CEO of Raytheon Company. "We are honored to be recognized for our commitment to community by Bloomberg, NCoC and Points of Light. We appreciate their efforts to help businesses become better stewards of their communities and to challenge us all to continue to innovate so that future generations may benefit from our actions."

Raytheon has a three-pronged strategic approach to community outreach: math and science education initiatives, armed services support, and local community support. The company executes this strategy through programs such as MathMovesU®, employee volunteering, and contributions. Raytheon's corporate responsibility efforts are guided by the company's vision, strategy, goals and values -- values built on people, integrity, commitment and excellence. MathMovesU®  is the company's flagship science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) education program. It takes a holistic approach to addressing the nation's STEM challenge, connecting with students from elementary school through college, supporting educators and policymakers, and promoting racial and gender equality, to make a meaningful, long-term impact, inspiring students to develop and sustain an interest in math and science.
