PepsiCo's Progress in Reducing GHG Emissions

Last year, PepsiCo announced an ambitious set of goals as it redoubled its commitment to Performance with Purpose—the fundamental belief that business success is inextricably linked to the sustainability of the world we share. One key element of this agenda is the company’s goal to cut greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by at least 20 percent across its value chain by 2030. This goal has now been verified by the Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTI), an organization which champions science-based approaches to reducing GHG emissions. This signifies that the goal is in line with what is necessary to keep global temperatures to within two degrees Celsius of pre-industrial levels, the target set by governments as part of the 2015 Paris Agreement.

So far, just 44 companies worldwide have had climate targets verified as science-based. The SBTI verification is an important acknowledgement of PepsiCo’s commitment to do its part to limit the impact of climate change.

PepsiCo’s new goal builds on the company’s previous success in limiting its GHG emissions, including achieving an improvement of nearly 18 percent in the energy efficiency of its direct operations between 2006 and 2015. This resulted in estimated energy cost savings of more than $96 million.
