PepsiCo plans to make all India plants water positive

New Delhi: Having achieved positive water balance in the country, PepsiCo India has turned its focus on its manufacturing plants spread across the states.

The cola major has targeted to achieve positive water balance around its plants located in water stressed geographies in the country. In the next few months, the company will initiative water projects in four-five locations around the plants it has identified in Punjab and Tamil Nadu.   In a phased manner, similar initiatives are also expected to be taken up around its other plants in India. PepsiCo has 36 plants manufacturing plants across India. Of these, only 13 are company-owned while the remaining 23 are run by franchisees.   For PepsiCo India, the Indian subsidiary of US major PepsiCo, the move to focus on areas in and around its manufacturing facilities is in line with the overall global efforts to strive positive water balance.   In India, PepsiCo has often raised the hackles of the environmental lobby which has accused the company and its larger rival Coca Cola India, of overexploitation of groundwater at a time when in many blocks, the rate of extraction of groundwater is increasing and exceeds the rate of recharge, leading to lowered water tables.   To continue reading about PepsiCo’s water projects in India, click here.     About PepsiCo PepsiCo offers the world's largest portfolio of billion-dollar food and beverage brands, including 19 different product lines that generate more than $1 billion in annual retail sales each.
